DEVELOPING A MODEL VILLAGE IN RAJASTHAN

UPDATES : Mid-term evaluation on Water Harvesting

  

A three-day visit was organized by Vishwa Yuvak Kendra to explore the possibilities of starting developmental programmes at Kashi-ka-Bass, a village in Sikar district of Rajasthan. On May 22, a meeting was organised with the villagers of Kashi-ka-Bass to find out the needs of the village. Programme Officers of Vishwa Yuvak Kendra with the villagers also took a round of the village to see the infrastructural facilities available there.

On May 23, another meeting was organised. Shri Laxman Singh, an expert on Watershed Management from Laporia, Rajasthan, discussed on water scarcity and its management etc. Since Rajasthan is known for water crisis it was discussed to face the challenge and make water available to meet the requirement through minimising wastage of water and also water harvesting and recharging.Shri Laxman Singh, with the villagers and VYK officials took a move around the village to see the water belt through which the rain water flows. The team went and saw the areas where the rain water is collected. They also met the District Magistrate & District Collector, Sikar and also the Head, Shekhawati Women’s Hospital and Research Centre at Sikar. Both of them assured necessary support. 

A meeting was held with the villagers where the team members of Gayatri Shakti Peeth (an organization working for holistic development of man kind) explained about the important role the youth can play for the development of the society. They showed keen interest to initiate their programmes with the involvement of the villagers especially the youth.

It was felt that the following needs are to be fulfilled through collective effort.

 

·  Maternity services in the existing Primary Health Centre.

 

·  Education facility after 10+2.

 

·  Vocational training for unemployed youth.

 

·  Polytechnic Mahila Mahavidyalay.

 

·  Facility of solar energy.

Mid-term evaluation on Water Harvesting

A mid-term evaluation meeting on Water Harvesting for Kashi-ka-Bas and ten other villages in Sikar district of Rajasthan was held in Jaipur on 19 June, 2008.
Director and Programme Officers of Vishwa Yuvak Kendra, New Delhi, Water Harvesting Experts from Gram Vikas Navyuvak Mandal, Laporiya, Rajasthan, Block Development officer of Dhodh block, concerned staff of Jamnalal Kaniram Bajaj Trust, Sikar and members from village committees of Kashi-ka-Bas and some other villages attended the meeting.
Water Harvesting expert team members who have already initiated some work gave a detailed presentation as follows of the activities done so far in the proposed project area.

 

·  Toposheets of all the identified villages and its geographical recommendation have been studied and assessed and analysed.

 

·  Project sites have been visited by experts and meeting held in all the concerned villages to discuss in details about the proposed project.

 

·  Detailed planning for all the villages have been done.

 

·  Estimated budget for water harvesting work in all 11 villages have been proposed.

After the presentation it was discussed in details and was suggested that the excavation work for Water Harvesting project can be undertaken through NAREGA being implemented by the Government of India throughout the country.
It was also suggested that the people in the proposed Water Harvesting areas should be made well aware about the project in details and then the actual work should be started. In other words, it should be a project of the people and by the people.
