Abstract: :: Tribe is a group of people, speaking a common dialect, inhabiting a common territory and displaying certain homogeneity in their culture. Some of the socio-economic characteristic features of tribes throw light on the nature of problems of tribal societies. They are known for economic backwardness. The occupations pursued by them are mainly cultivation, hunting and food-gathering and some of their subsidiary occupations are basket-making, spinning, weaving, bamboo-making, rope-making etc.The educational problems of Scheduled Tribes are more serious than that of any other section of the society because of their special geographical and environmental constraints. The enrollment of girl child is less than boys in primary, upper primary and also in secondary stage in the case of Scheduled castes. In the case of Scheduled Tribes, the enrollment at primary stage has been around 7-9 per cent. It is between 5 and 7 per cent in upper primary stage and it is only 3-5 per cent in secondary stage. The Government has to make sustainable efforts to increase the educational status of Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribes during the years to come.
