Bihar, 21-25 May 2010

Another five-day EDP was organised by Vishwa Yuvak Kendra in collaboration with Lok Kalyan Samiti from 21-25 May 2010. During the inauguration Vikas Kumar, Programme Officer, Vishwa Yuvak Kendra, said that entrepreneurship development is very important for self-employment as this is the time of globalisation and there is ample scope for selfemployment. It is very important to safeguard both unemployment and the migration of youth from rural to urban areas. Hence, it has become a necessity to move towards selfemployment and entrepreneurship.
Many schemes are now being implemented for the eradication of unemployment in the country. To become a good entrepreneur one must possess interest, initiative, the skill to identify and act on opportunity, persistence, curiosity, concern for high quality, innovation, efficiency, commitment, systematic planning, problem solving skills, confidence, how to use influencing strategies, goal setting and risk taking. Apart from these every youth going for an entrepreneurship programme should be motivated and trained in management, costing and marketing.

Power to Women

As per the 2001 census, Jharkhand had a total population of 26.9 million of which 13.9 million were male and the remaining were female. For the period 1991-2001, Jharkhand’s growth rate (23.2%) was much lower than that of its parent state Bihar (28.4%), but above the national level growth rate (21.3%). There has been a marginal decrease in the population growth rate between the periods 1981-1991 (24%) and 1991- 2001 (23.2%); however, the growth rate in Jharkhand continues to be much higher than in many other states. If the population growth rate continues at the same level, the population size of Jharkhand will be double in 32 years.
Maternal malnutrition is a major cause for concern in the state of Jharkhand. Almost 75% women suffer from anaemia, a prevalence level much higher than the national average (52%). About 30% suffer from moderate to severe anaemia as compared with 17% for India as a whole. Four of every 10 women in Jharkhand are undernourished. About two-thirds of women in the child-bearing age are anaemic and pregnant women experience the highest levels of anaemia.
Jharkhand, along with Bihar, has the lowest female literacy rate of 39.98%. More men are literate than woman. Girls are still deprived of primary education, due to several factors such as inaccessibility, household duties, early marriage, early child-bearing, gender bias associated drudgery and other socio-cultural factors. Since resources are scarce, parents decide to send male children to school in preference to female children. Acute poverty has proved to be a barrier to the education of girls.
By looking at these rationales, Vishwa Yuvak Kendra organised a three-day training programme for the needy and rural women in the district of Deoghar in collaboration with Lok Kalyan Samiti, Gidhaur, from 22-24 May 2010. The programme was coordinated by Vikas Kumar, Programme Officer, Vishwa Yuvak Kendra and Nandlal Singh of the Lok Kalyan Samiti. Other resource persons were Mukti Rani, Anandita Dhingra and Madhuri from various developmental sectors.
