Maharashtra

Popatrao Pawar from Hiwre Bazar, in the district of Ahmed Nagar, Maharashtra, gave a detailed presentation on how he made his village a model as far as total development is concerned.

Development Highlights    
  1. Ban on grazing increased production of grass from 200 tons in 1994-95 to more than 5,000-6,000 tons in 2001-2002
  2. Ban on felling trees has increased the bio-mass with nine lakh trees
  3. Ban on liquor has increased efficiency of manpower and helped save money
  4. Due to a successful family planning programme, the birth rate has been brought down to 11 per 1,000 (one family one child)
  5. Shramdan not only helps in improving the work culture but also creates assets and standards in community development. The Government of Maharashtra has sanctioned Rs 66 lakh while the villagers’ (Hiwre Bazar) contribution is Rs 21 lakh through Shramdan
  6. Reduction in soil erosion
  7. Increase in fodder availability for cows
  8. Increase in milk production
  9. Rise in ground water level

Rajasthan

Laxman Singh from Laporiya, Rajasthan, also gave a detailed presentation on how he worked for the development of the village Laporiya and other surrounding villages. Gram Vikas Nav Yuvak Mandal, the NGO established by him, has been working for the last 34 years. Intervention Areas

Alumni Meet, 10 August 2011

The programme commenced with the inaugural address by Shishir Bajaj, Managing Trustee, Indian Youth Centres Trust. During his speech, he especially appreciated the gesture of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, who had allotted two acres in the Diplomatic Enclave. He also spoke about other great personalities such as Ramakrishna Bajaj, Morarji Desai, Naval H. Tata and Ravindra Varma who were instrumental in the establishment of Indian Youth Centres Trust. He said the VYK has grown as a pioneering organisation and has produced a lot of professionals who are mostly engaged in development work.

Alumni Meet

He added that India is a vast country with a huge population with thousand of issues that need to be worked upon. Whatever we are doing is a drop in the ocean but, at the same time, we are contributing something to the society in our own ways. He appreciated all the alumni who were associated with Vishwa Yuvak Kendra. He requested everyone to be involved with Vishwa Yuvak Kendra for any type of collaboration, cooperation and association. He recommended the expansion of the VYK activities in the near future. He requested all the delegates to share their thoughts and send feedback for Kendra’s progress.

Alumni Meet

Rajat Kumar Narain, Chairman, Indian Youth Centres Trust, requested the ex-trainees and employees to become change agents of society in their respective fields. He emphasised on the refresher course for the staff to equip them with the latest developments. He called for the alumni to share experiences with the staff to draw inspiration.
