Food Security & Hunger Management
International Conference
|
|
Gandhiji emphasised that hunger should be
overcome without eroding human dignity. He
wanted every Indian to have an opportunity to
earn his or her daily bread. |

As per the definitions of the
UN’s Food and Agriculture
Organisation (FAO) and
the United States Department of
Agriculture (USDA), food security
exists when all people, at all
times, have physical, social and
economic access to sufficient, safe
and nutritious food to meet their
dietary needs and food preferences
for an active and healthy life. A
household is considered foodsecure
when its occupants do not
live in hunger or fear of starvation.
According to the World Resources
Institute, worldwide around 852
million people are chronically
hungry due to extreme poverty,
while up to two billion people lack
food security intermittently due to
varying degrees of poverty.

both food and energy
security to the country,
provided the productivity
of the land is increased

Studying the global need
for food security, hunger and
nutritional management and
observing the power behind
the growing youth force,
Vishwa Yuvak Kendra (VYK)
organised an international
conference on ‘Food Security
and Hunger Management’ from 28-30 July 2011. The
intent of this conference was to
inform, influence and catalyse
action by youth at large and key
actors—including policymakers,
nongovernmental organisations,
the private sector, educators
and researchers—to better
use investments in agriculture
to achieve food and nutrition
security and good health for the
world’s poorest people. |

Shishir Bajaj, Managing Trustee, pointed out that whatever the farmers are producing,
they are not getting enough money. The
traders in between are getting more money
than the producers. That is what is happening
for all these years since Independence. He
expected that such conferences and discussions
would help in finding some concrete solutions
to such problems.
Rajat Narain, Chairman, thanked all the
resource persons and participants for making
this conference a fruitful one. He specially
thanked the M.S. Swaminathan Research
Foundation, Indian Council of Agricultural
Research and National Agricultural Science
Complex as well as the farmers for sharing
their knowledge of highly valuable experiences
from the field.
There were about 200 participants from
various fields related to food, agriculture,
farming, marketing and NGO sectors. Seven
young scientists from Agriculture Universities
presented their research papers on topics
related to food and hunger management.
The participants and resource persons present
during the concluding session appreciated
the efforts of the VYK staff for the successful
completion of the conference. |
